Linguistic interoperability is important to ensure that countries are able to participate effectively in multinational activities. Accordingly, English has become the defacto lingua franca for transnational police engagement: equally important domestically as globally. This especially holds true within the European Union and United Nations due to an ever-increasing number of international operations, cooperation, and partnership activities. Therefore the need for effective communication is particularly acute where language and cultural-based misunderstandings lead to mistakes.
